Abstract

This research aims to verify whether applying the PQRST method can improve character based reading of the tenth year students of MA Al-Muttaqien Pancasila Sakti in academic year of 2022/2023. The study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The data were analyzed by quantitative and qualitative analysis. The quantitative data were collected from the test, and the qualitative data were collected from observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. The method of analyzing the data was descriptive statistics in the form of the mean. The result of the study shows that students’ reading comprehension and students’ character improve gradually. From the pre-cycle before applying the PQRST method, the score of students’ reading skill was 57,67 and students’ character was 2,65. The result in pre-cycle supported by the score of teacher’s professionalism was 2,91, the students’ individual interest was 2,82, the score of students’ self assessment was 2,65. In cycle 1, the students’ reading skill is 70,33 and students’ character was 2,86. This improvement was supported by the teacher’s professionalism and students’ interest which is started to improve after applying the PQRST method. The teacher’s professionalism score is 2,93, the students’ individual interest is 2,84, and the student self assessment 2,86. It means the teacher was able to apply the method, so it made students interested to learn reading. In cycle 2, the students’ reading skill is 76,67 and the students’ character is 2,98. The students’ reading skill improved and it is higher than the passing grade of 75. The result of teacher’s professionalism is 2,95, the students’ individual interest is 2,85, and the students self assessment 2,91. This improvement was also supported by the teacher’s ability in applying the method and students’ interest began to improve in learning reading by using the PQRST method. So, it can be concluded that the PQRST method can improve the mastery of character based reading of the tenth year students of MA Al-Muttaqien Pancasila Sakti in academic year of 2022/2023.
