Abstract
Suwandi. 14PSC10669. An Effort to Improve the Motivation and Skill to Write Narrations of the Students in Grade V of State Primary School I of Sumber Purwantoro through Serial Pictorial Media. Thesis. Language Education Programme, Magister Programme, Widya Dharma University Klaten, 2016. The aims of this research are to improve: 1) the motivation to write narrations through serial pictorial media, and 2) the skill to write narrations of the students in Grade V of State Primary School I of Sumber Purwantoro through serial pictorial media. This research is a classroom action one. It was divided into two cycles, and each cycle was executed twice with the following procedures: 1) planning, 2) action, 3) observation, and 4) reflection. It was conducted at State Primary School I of Sumber Purwantoro in the academic year of 2015/2016 for six months from December 2015 to May 2016. Subjects of the research were 1 class teacher and 20 students consisting 10 male and 10 female students. Its data were gathered through observation, in-depth interview, test, content analysis (document analysis), and questionnaire. The data were validated through data source triangulation and data gathering method triangulation. They were then analyzed by using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The former used a descriptive statistic technique, whereas the latter used a descriptive comparative technique. Based on the analysis, the results of the research are as follows: 1) The learning using serial pictorial media much more improves the students’ motivation to write narrations. In cycle I, the students’ motivation to write narration reached 70%, and in Cycles II their motivation to write narrations reached 89.48% respectively. 2) The use of serial pictorial media can improve the students’ skill to write narrations. In the pre-action activity, the students completing their writing learning were 6 (30%). In Cycles I and II the students completing their writing learning were 13 (65%) and 17 (85%) respectively. The average scores of the students’ skill to write narrations in pre-action and in Cycles I and II were 62.50, 67.25, and 73.00 respectively
