Abstract
Siti Khotimah, 15PSC01696. Improving Reading and Writing Skills Using Javanese Flash Card at the Class VIII B SMP Negeri 1 Garung, Wonosobo in the First Semester of Academic Year 2016/ 2017, Thesis: Language Education of Graduate Program Widya Dharma University Klaten, 2017 In the earlier stage of the research, several problems of reading and writing skill Java letters were found in the Class VIII B students of SMP Negeri 1 Garung, Wonosobo in the academic year of 2016/2017. The first problem was that the students’ reading and writing skill were in low level. It was indicated by the low score of reading and writing test. The second problem was that the students’ motivation in learning activities was also low. It was indicated by the situation in the class where the students were busy with other activity than the learning activity (drawing, chatting with friends), passive, and ignored teacher’s instructions. Then, to solve the problems, an action research was conducted by using Javanese Flash Card to improve students’ reading and writing skill. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate whether or not Javanese Flash Card can improve the reading and writing skill and the situation when it is implemented in reading and writing class. This action research was conducted from September to December 2016. The subjects of this research were the Class VIII B students of SMP Negeri 1 Garung, Wonosobo in the 2016/2017 academic year. There were two cycles of action. In each cycle, the procedure of the research consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the writer used field notes, observation, interview, photos, and test. The field notes were made by the writer, and observation was held by the the teacher as an observer. The interview was held by the writer to the students. The tests were pre-test, post-test 1 in cycle 1and post-test 2 in cycle 2. The writer analyzed the test results by comparing the mean score of the pre-test and post- test. The result of the research showed that, first, the implementation of Javanese Flash Card can improve the students’ reading and writing skill. Based on the research observation, field notes, interview, and test result, the students made improvement in reading and writing skill. The testscore results showed the improvement of the students’ achievement before and after the action in cycle 1 and cycle 2. The students’ mean score in the pre-test was 64,9. The students’ mean score in the post- test 1 was 77,5 and the mean score in post-test 2 was 87,4. Second, the class situation in reading and writing learning also improved. It can be seen from the students motivation to join the lesson. The students became excited, enthusiastic, and happy during teaching and learning process. Based on these results, it can be concluded that teaching Javanese by using Javanese Flash Card does improve students’ reading and writing skill and class situation.
