Abstract

UNTUNG EKO SAPUTRO 1411202896 English Education Study Program Teacher Training and Education Faculty Widya Dharma University Klaten 2016. Thesis: A Descriptive Study on the Mastery of Writing of the Tenth Year Students of SMA N 1 Tanjungsari, Gunungkidul in the academic Year 2016/2017. The aim of the thesis is to describe the mastery of writing of the tenth year students of SMA N 1 Tanjungsari Gunungkidul in academic year 2016/2017. The researcher wants to answer the problem of this study namely, “How is the mastery of writing of the tenth year students of SMA N 1 Tanjungsari Gunungkidul in academic year 2016/2017?”. The research used the descriptive quantitative method. This research was done to the tenth year students of SMA N 1 Tanjungsari Gunungkidul in academic year 2016/2017. The number of the population is 163 students that are divided into six classes, consisting of class X MIA-1=27 students, X MIA-2= 27 students, X MIA-3= 28 students, X IIS-1= 29 students, X IIS-2= 26 students and X IIS-3= 26 students. In this study, the researcher took 30 students as the sample. The researcher used proportional random sampling technique; the researcher has decide to take 5 students each class to be sample of this research. So, the total sample used by the researcher was 30 students. In this research, the researcher uses essay test to know students skill in writing. After the data having obtained, the researcher analyzed them by statistic method in the form of mean. Then, the result of the students‟ mastery was categorized into quantitative and qualitative. The result of the study shows that the mean is 54, 33. It means that the writing mastery of the tenth year students of SMA N 1 Tanjungsari Gunungkidul in academic year 2016/2017 is categorized as Poor. Key words: descriptive study, mastery, writing.
