Abstract

DEWI SELIYANA, 1311202841, English Education Study Program, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Widya Dharma University, Klaten, 2017. Thesis : “A Descriptive Study on The Mastery of Reading of the Eighth Year Students of SMP N 3 BayatKlaten in Academic Year of 2016/ 2017”. The problem of this study is “How is the mastery of reading of the eighth year students of SMP N 3 BayatKlaten in the academic year of 2016/2017?” This study aims to describe the mastery of reading of the Eighth Year Students of SMP N 3 BayatKlaten in Academic Year of 2016/ 2017”. In this study, the writer takes all of the Eighth Year Students of SMP N 3 BayatKlaten as the population. The number of the population is 193 students. They come from 6 classes. Therefore, the writer takes 15% from them or 30 students as the sample by using proportional random sampling. It means that the writer takes 5 students for each class to be selected as the sample by lottery. In collecting the data, the writer gives a test that consists of 20 items in the form of multiple choices. The writer analyzes the data by using statistics method. It is implemented in the form of mean and table to know the student’s mastery of reading. After analyzing the data, the writer knows the students who get very good marks are 18 students or 60%, those who get good marks are 11 students or 37% and fair mark is 1 student or 3%. Besides that, there is no student who gets poor mark and fail mark. The mean of the students’ mastery of reading is 78 and it is classified into good category. So, the writer concludes that the mastery of reading of the eighth year students of SMP N 3 BayatKlaten in Academic Year of 2016/ 2017 is good.
