Abstract

DEWI UTAMI SRI SAYEKTI, NO.1211202823, English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Widya Dharma University, Klaten, 2016.Undergraduate Thesis: A Descriptive Study on the Mastery of Reading of the Eighth Year Students of SMP N 1 Karanganom Klaten in Academic year 2015/2016. The Aim of the study is to describe the mastery of reading of the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganom Klaten in Academic year 2015/2016. The problem statement of this research is “How is the mastery of reading of the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganom Klaten in academic year 2015/2016 ?. The population of this research is the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganom Klaten in academic year 2015/2016. The number of population is 257 students that are divided into 8 classes. The Writer takes 40 students or 15% as the sample by applying Proportional random sampling. In getting the data, the writer needs the instrument. The writer uses test as the instrument. And the form of test used in this research is multiple-choice. The number of the test item is 20. One option is right and the others are wrong. The students are expected to choose the correct answer. The 20 items must be done within 45 minutes. The writer tries out the instrument, before applying for the subject of the study. To know the validity the writer uses empirical validity using the Pearson’s Product Moment Formula. To know the reliability of the instrument the writer uses Spearman Brown formula. In analyzing the data, the writer uses statistic method which is implemented in the form of the mean. The tables are also used as bases to make description of the data since this is descriptive study. After analyzing the data, the writer can find that the students who get very good scores are 18 students or 45%, good scores are 7 students or 17,5%, fair scores are 15 students or 37,5%, poor score is 0 student or 0%, and fail score is 0 student or 0%. The total score of the students’ mastery is 3195 for 40 students. The mean is 79.87 and it is categorized into good category. So that, it can be concluded that the reading mastery of the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Karanganom Klaten in academic year 2015/2016 is good.
