Abstract

Taryanto. NIM : 13PSC01580. Teaching and Learning of Diary Writing (A Case- Study on The Seventh Year Students (Class D) of SMP N 3 Karangmojo, Gunungkidul, Odd Semester, Academic Year 2013/2014). Thesis. Language Education Study Program, Magister Programme, Widya Dharma University Klaten, 2014. The writer of this study believes that students show a low interest in writing lesson; they do not know what should be written. During their teaching and learning process, the teacher does not use various methods. This study aims at : (1) Describing the teaching and learning process of diary writing for the seventh year students (Class D) of SMP N 3 Karangmojo, Gunungkidul, Odd Semester, Academic Year 2013/2014. (2) Finding the influencing factors of why the above teaching and learning activity is done in such a ways. This is a descriptive, yet; qualitative study with case-study as its strategy. The data-sources are teaching and learning process of diary writing, the transcript of interview and documents like syllabus and lesson plan, the learning material, test- instrument, students’ work and their marks. The observation is done within one teaching and learning session (2 x 40 minutes ). The recorded result are then to be textualized : the data are grouped based on teacher’s and students’ activity from the beginning until the end of the lesson. This process produces PID (statement of data identity). There are 30 PID, there are reduced thematically into 25 Udaut (main data units). Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that during the teaching and learning process of diary writing for the seventh year students (Class D) of SMP N 3 Karangmojo, Gunungkidul, Odd Semester, Academic Year 2013/2014 : (a) The teacher has done the introductory, main, and the closing activity. (b) Not all students active during the lesson. (c) The given material refers to the theme of diary-writing. (d) The methods are modelling system, assignment, tutorial, and questionand answer. (e) The media are very simple : white board and markers, pocket-book, an example of diary. (f) The evaluation done by the teacher has referred to its lesson plan. The influencing factors are as folow: (a) The teacher has known the right steps of teaching. (b) The teacher has not found an effective way to activate the students. (c)The teacher has prepared the learning material. (d) The teacher chooses the method of modelling, assignment, tutorial, question and answer. (e) Both teacher and the school has not provided sufficient teaching facilities. (f) The teacher has applied the right step : an evaluation in the form of individual assignment in diary-writing.
