Abstract

GUMAWANG SETIYANTO. NIM 1781100051. RELATIONSHIP OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND MASTERY OF EFFECTIVE SENTENCES ON DESCRIPTION WRITING ABILITY TO CLASS VIII STUDENTS OF SMPN 5 KLATEN 2018/2019. Thesis. Language Education Study, Postgraduate Program of Widya Dharma University, Klaten. 2019. This study aims to: 1) Describe the relationship of emotional intelligence to the students ability to write descriptions. 2) Describe the relationship of mastery of effective sentences to the students ability to write descriptions. 3) Describe the relationship of emotional intelligence and mastery of effective sentences to the students ability to write descriptions. This study uses a survey method through a correlational approach to determine the support of two independent variables with the dependent variable. The independent variables in this study are emotional intelligence (X1) and effective sentence mastery (X2) while the dependent variable is the students ability to write descriptions (Y). The population of all eighth grade students of SMP 5 Klaten is 256 people. This study uses a simple random sampling technique that uses simple random numbers without lottery returns and does not pay attention to strata found in the population. The samples used in this study were students of class VIII A, VIII B, VIII E, and VIII G of SMP 5 Klaten, totaling 128 students. Data analysis using linear regression techniques showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between X1 and Y, because it was obtained r count value = 0.693> r table = 0.172 and t = 0.003 <t table = 1.980. There is a positive and significant relationship between X2 and Y ability, because r count = 0.490> r table = 0.172 and t count = 0.003 <t table = 1.980. There is a positive and significant correlation simultaneously X1, X2 to Y, because Ry12 is obtained = 0.816> r table = 0.172. From the calculation results also obtained the value of Fcount = 3.737  F table = 3.068. The coefficient of determination (R square) of 0.667. Thus it can be concluded that there is a positive and significant correlation simultaneously emotional intelligence (X1), mastery of effective sentences (X2), to the ability to write a description (Y) SMPN 5 Klaten academic year 2018/2019.
