Abstract

Sugeng Wibowo. 14.PSC.01599. THE CORRELATION BETWEEN POETRY INTEREST AND THE MASTERY OF DICTION AND THE ABILITY OF POETRY APPRECIATION ON THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 NGUTER SUKOHARJO). Thesis: Graduate Program, Widya Dharma University. Klaten. 2018. This research aimed to determine the correlation between (1) poetry interest and the ability of poetry appreciation, (2) the mastery of the diction and the ability of poetry appreciation, and (3) both poetry interest and the mastery of diction together and the ability of poetry appreciation. The research was done in SMP Negeri 2 Nguter Sukoharjo from January to June 2009. The research method used was descriptive of correlational. The population of the research were all the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 2 Nguter Sukoharjo. The sample consisted of 80 students who were taken by using simple random sampling. The instruments used for data collection were: test for the ability of poetry appreciation, questionary for poetry interest, and test for the mastery of diction. The technique used for analyzing the data was the statistical technique of regression and correlation. The result of the study shows that: (1) there is a positive correlation between poetry interest and the ability of poetry appreciation (r y1 = .49 at the level of significance α = .05 where to = 4.96 > tt = 1.66) ); (2) there is a positive correlation between the mastery of diction and the ability of poetry appreciation (r y2 = .52 at the level of significance α = .05 where to = 5.37 > tt = 1.66) ; (3) there is a positive correlation between both poetry interest and the mastery of diction together and the ability of poetry appreciation (R y. 12 = .53 at the level of significance α = .05 where Fo =14.96 > Ft = 3.96).
