Abstract

OVAN RAMADHAN. 1411202924, English Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Widya Dharma University, Klaten, 2018. Thesis: A Case Study Character Based on Teaching and Learning Speaking Skill of the Eleventh Year Students of SMK Negeri 4 Klaten in Academic Year of 2017/2018. This research is intended to answer the question which become problem of this study such as 1)How is the process of character-based teaching and learning speaking of the eleventh year students of SMK Negeri 4 Klaten in the academic year of 2017/2018?; 2)What are the obstacles that found in character-based teaching and learning speaking of the eleventh year students of SMK Negeri 4 Klaten in the academic year of 2017/2018?; 3) How doesthe solution of the obstacles in character-based teaching and learning speaking of the eleventh year students of SMK Negeri 4 Klaten in academic year of 2017/2018?; and 4) What are the results can be achieved by the students in the character-based teaching and learning speaking of the eleventh year students of SMK Negeri 4 Klaten in academic year 2017/2018. This study is related to the result of apreliminary study. It showed that the students were still poor in English speaking skill, especially in giving interpersonal response. In this study, the researcher uses case study. The researcher observes the teaching and learning English lesson especially in speaking that related to character education in the eleventh grade of administration office one at SMK Negeri 4 Klaten. The researcher uses three instruments to collect the data namely observation, interview, and documentation. The interview is used to support the collected data in observation. The documetation is used to complete the data in teaching and learning process. Based on this research, the researcher concludes that 1) the process of teaching and learning English speaking skill consist of preparation such as lesson plan and material;classroom activity such as opening, main activity, and closing;speaking assessment is done by the teacher based on suitability of content with the goal of speaking namely pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluently, and comprehension;2) the problems that found in teaching and learning are the students afraid to speak up before the class, the students hesitant when they answer the teacher’ questions, and the students shy when they make mistakes while the teacher give them a question orally;3)the solution to overcome the obstaclesare teacher monitors all students by walking around and guides the students to speak active by giving simple topic and simple question while teaching material in order to speak active; 4)the character which was implemented when teaching and learning is conducted such as active, team work, independent, curiosity, and communicative.
